Project Information

Background

The purpose of this project is to replace the Union Hill Road Bridge over Route 9 due to its structural condition, insufficient vertical clearance over Route 9, inadequate deck geometry, and non-compliance with ADA standards for existing sidewalks.

The two-span bridge is located on Union Hill Road at Mile Post 1.54 in Marlboro, Monmouth County. The bridge has one travel lane in each direction, a westbound left turn lane leading to the Clayton Road/Route 9 southbound on-ramp, and a sidewalk on the south side.

The Proposed Project

The Preliminary Preferred Alternative for the project includes the following key elements:

  • The existing bridge, which is in poor condition, will be replaced with a modern, single-span structure.
  • The new bridge will accommodate 11-foot through lanes and 5-foot shoulders in each direction, a 12-foot westbound left turn lane, and a 6-foot sidewalk on the south side.
  • The Union Hill Road bridge vertical underclearance over Route 9 will be raised to 16-feet, 6-inches to meet current standards. Union Hill Road will be raised, and the existing substandard stopping sight distances will be eliminated.
  • Proposed bridge abutments will be set back to accommodate future shoulders and a bicycle path as a part of complete streets accommodation on Route 9.
  • To accommodate the elevation changes of the Union Hill Road profile beyond the existing right-of-way boundaries, the project will require a fee take area, as well as slope, access, and sidewalk easements.
  • Public utilities will be relocated as part of the project.
  • The replacement of the Union Hill Road Bridge will utilize Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) techniques to minimize construction time, including the use of precast concrete elements.

Traffic Construction Impacts

Traffic on Union Hill Road will be rerouted within the interchange using temporary ramps and two temporary traffic signals on Route 9. A pedestrian sidewalk will be maintained throughout construction. By using Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) techniques, the anticipated detour duration is six months.
